CONSUMER TIPS- FLORAL DESIGNERS

A thing of beauty is a joy for ever:
Its lovliness increases; it will never
Pass into nothingness; but still will keep
A bower quiet for us, and a sleep
Full of sweet dreams, and health,
and quiet breathing.

John Keats, Endymion (1818)

Weddings are special, beautiful affair. A time to share memories with close friends and relatives, and your new spouse. Flowers are a large part of this occasion and are a lovely way to set the tone for a perfect day. In preparation for this date, one must make some floral plans and preparations for both and after the wedding.

To begin with, the floral foam must be soaked. This allows the flowers to soak in some moisture after being cut fresh or after being pulled from water buckets. The amount of soaking time depends on the type of blocks (check the instructions) and can be done in an old bucket or tin pail. Drain them slightly, as they are quite heavy after being soaked. As long as they remain damp, it is easy to recharge when needed.

Fresh flowers should be picked either early or late in the day. Do not attempt to pick in the warmest temperatures as they will wilt earlier. Cut the stems at an angle and allow them to get a long, cool drink in deep water before arranging. Two hours in minimum and overnight is preferred.

After the wedding is over and the celebrations are memories, the clearing and cleaning is ahead. If the ceremony was held in a church, it is more than likely that the flowers will be left for the congregation to enjoy. However, following the service, the remaining flowers can be reused. Nursing homes are usually thrilled to receive them as are hospitals and hospices. It is wise to check first that they will be welcome.
